Tattoo ink does not increase the risk of developing melanoma, but it is harder to diagnose melanoma hidden within a tattoo. Pigmented nevi (birthmarks) continuously develop throughout life, and they may also appear in the tattooed area. Laser tattoo removal can be problematic if melanoma has formed underneath the tattoo. During laser removal, the cells are destroyed, making it impossible to analyze them for melanoma. Therefore, it is recommended to surgically remove any pigmented nevus in the area before laser tattoo removal to ensure the patient’s safety.
