Dynamic wrinkles are caused by the muscles that move when you smile, laugh and frown. They are often found around the lips, on the forehead, between the eyebrows and also on the neck. As we age, these wrinkles become deeper and easier to notice. Type A botulinum toxin can be used to make these wrinkles less visible. Botulinum injections are often called by their brand names (Botox, Dysport).
How does type A botulinum toxin work?
Botulinum is a biological neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum blocks nerve signals to the muscle where it was injected. Without a signal, the corresponding muscles relax and unwanted wrinkles become less noticeable over time. With a careful selection of specific muscles, only the wrinkle-causing muscles are relaxed, thus preserving a natural facial appearance.
Description of procedure
Before the procedure, consult a doctor to discuss your purpose for the procedure and your medical condition (allergies, medication).
1. Before the botulinum injection, the doctor may apply an anaesthetic to the corresponding area.
2. The botulinum toxin is then injected into specific muscles. The number of injections you need will depend on your facial features and the amount of wrinkles. Fine needles are used for the injections.
The procedure takes about 15 minutes. About 3 days after the injection, you should feel your muscles start to relax. After 1 week, you'll probably see fewer wrinkles on your face.
The effect of botulinum lasts for 3-6 months.
After the procedure:
- Keep the injection site clean.
- Do not rub the injection sites after injection.
- Do not use make-up products for 12 hours after injection.
- Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours.
The procedure is not carried out:
- For pregnant and breastfeeding women.
- For those under 18 without written parental consent.
- In the case of active herpes.
- In the case of muscle disease.
- If there are skin problems near the injection site.
